FixGrid Academy Labs

Technical Systems Curriculum

16 modules focused on system understanding, diagnostic method, sequence and control logic, and applied judgment — built so technicians, supervisors, and engineers can stay capable as energy technology advances.

Scenario-based practice for real service judgment

Each lab opens with a safety-first gate — lockout, water, PPE — then gives you the same limited information a real service call provides. You choose the next test, see what it actually proves, and finish with the confirmed cause and a debrief that transfers to the field. Maya coaches at every step, branching decisions are allowed and explained, and the grading focuses on reasoning rather than memorized answers.

The scenarios cover residential laundry and refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, and light commercial / rooftop equipment. Technicians use them to sharpen diagnostic judgment; supervisors and engineers use them to keep teams current as equipment and controls continue to evolve.

Safety gate first

Every lab locks the diagnosis until you confirm lockout, water, and PPE steps — the same order you owe a real customer.

Branching decisions

You choose the next test. Wrong turns are allowed and explained, so the lesson sticks instead of being narrated at you.

Maya coaches you

A tutor panel sits beside every step with the reasoning a senior tech would give you over the shoulder.

Debrief that transfers

Each lab closes with the confirmed diagnosis, what you did well, what to watch for, and a model service note.

All scenarios

New labs are added every release. Start with the washer drain circuit — it teaches the test-before-you-replace habit that saves the most money in the field.

Intermediate ~10 minFree preview

Washer Not Draining

Top-load washer · 4 decision steps

A top-load washer fills and agitates, but never drains. Work hose, then filter, then pump — in that order.

Intermediate ~11 min

Refrigerator Not Cooling

Domestic refrigerator (top-freezer or side-by-side) · 4 decision steps

The fresh-food section is warm, the freezer still feels cold, and something clicks every 30–40 seconds at the back. Observe first, identify the start system, then prove the start circuit.

Ice Machine Not Producing

Commercial cuber ice machine (Manitowoc / Hoshizaki / Scotsman style) · 4 decision steps

A restaurant cuber runs, has water, and shows no fault — but drops no ice. Watch a full cycle, split water-side from refrigeration, then prove it before you quote a part.

Intermediate ~12 min

Walk-in Cooler Warm

Commercial walk-in cooler · 4 decision steps

A restaurant walk-in runs but will not hold temperature and product is warming. Read the box, then airflow, then the condenser — sealed system last.

Start lab
Intermediate ~11 min

Dryer No Heat

Electric dryer (residential) · 4 decision steps

A dryer tumbles normally but clothes come out cold and damp. Work the vent, then the heat circuit, then the safety devices — in that order.

Start lab
Intermediate ~11 min

Dishwasher Not Draining

Residential dishwasher · 4 decision steps

A dishwasher completes its cycle but leaves standing water in the tub. Work the air gap and hose, then the filter and sump, then the pump — in that order.

Intermediate ~11 min

Reach-in Cooler Warm

Commercial reach-in refrigerator · 4 decision steps

A restaurant reach-in runs but will not hold temperature and product is warming. Read the cabinet, then airflow, then the condenser — sealed system last.

Intermediate ~12 min

RTU Not Cooling

Light commercial rooftop packaged unit · 4 decision steps

A tenant space is warming while the rooftop unit runs with no alarm. Read the split, then indoor airflow, then heat rejection — charge last.

Academy Labs — common questions

Who are the interactive diagnostic labs for?
Independent appliance technicians, commercial refrigeration techs, and career changers getting job-ready. Each lab assumes you can read a meter but not that you already know the answer.
Do I need tools or equipment to train?
No. The labs simulate the service call, so you practise the decision order — confirm the complaint, rule out the cheap causes, then prove the component with a measurement — before you touch a customer's machine.
Does the training cover commercial refrigeration?
Yes. Alongside residential laundry and refrigeration, the library includes ice machine repair training, walk-in cooler training, reach-in cooler diagnostics, and rooftop unit troubleshooting training.
What do I earn for finishing the labs?
Completing every lab in a learning path issues a FixGrid Academy certificate with a unique credential ID that anyone — an employer or a customer — can verify publicly.
How long does one lab take?
Most labs run 10 to 15 minutes end to end, including the safety gate, four decision steps, and the debrief with a model service note.
