Reach-in Cooler Warm

Commercial reach-in refrigerator · Intermediate

Reach-in running warm in service. Airflow at the evaporator before anything refrigerant-side.

1Safety first

  • Open and lock out the disconnect or unplug the unit.
  • Confirm dead with a non-contact tester.
  • Watch for ice, standing water, and sharp coil fins.
  • Gloves and eye protection; towels staged for melt water.

2First checks

  • Take your own product and air temperatures — do not trust the display.
  • Check door gaskets, hinges, and how often the door is being opened.
  • Confirm the condensing unit runs and the evaporator fan turns.
  • Look for over-packed shelves blocking return air.

3Narrow the system

  • Split it: load/door vs airflow/defrost vs refrigeration side.
  • Pull the evaporator cover and inspect the coil for ice or lint.
  • Check the condenser coil and filter for blockage.
  • Review defrost settings and drain line condition.

4Highest-probability tests

  • Test the evaporator fan motor: runs freely, correct amps, correct rotation.
  • Confirm the coil is clear after a controlled defrost.
  • Check the defrost termination and thermostat/controller sensor placement.
  • Verify suction line condition and look for frost back.

5Common outcomes and watch-outs

  • Most common: iced or restricted evaporator, often behind a failed evap fan.
  • Replace the fan and clear the ice — treating only the ice guarantees a callback.
  • Coach the staff on loading and door discipline.
  • Log pull-down and hold temperatures before you leave.
